The NOS-ABS system is a collection of
already-in-place *NOS facilities, and supplemental code (Perl) capable of
simulating functions similar to those utilized in APRS. It extends the
broadcast capability of *NOS and assists in managing both the data
sent out and collected by coordinating broadcast outputs with the reception
and interpretation of their inputs.
NOS-ABS is an open system. This means that the communication "protocols"
need to be designed by those using the network. They can be functionally
minimal, simple, or quite elaborate. (This system has been set up to be
"engineered" by you. In other words, you decide what categories of
information you want to broadcast in BEACON/ID transmissions and how you
want to process incoming data, not too different from normal beaconing,
just a bit more organized.)
The articles below offer detailed descriptions of the steps needed to
set up such a system at your radio station... It is not necessary to
implement all modules at once. Begin with the easiest ones first, such as
setting up a packet filter for receiving broadcast data. And please note,
as always, this is a work-in-progress :)
