Emergency Communications and
Information Resources

Emergency Related Articles and Web Sites

This index page lists articles pertaining to emergency uses for digital (packet) radio. It also refers to sites that feature related, background information. Some of these topics are quite broad, and might not seem directly related to digital radio communications, but were included because of their relevance to emergency conditions in the broadest possible context...

Sometimes, we may need to view the globe as an ecosystem where anomalous events may be related. At the least, we need to understand what "Mother Earth" is trying to tell us when she seems to be "shouting." If we listen, we may be able to "harden" our emergency communications network systems and be better prepared, no matter how severe conditions become...

There is probably no better application for packet radio than emergency operations! While packet radio certainly can be, and is, used in "hobby mode," its real strengths surface in times of disaster. It can prove to be the wireless lifeline back into the main stream of the internet which has the potential to connect assisting resources to those who need it!

At present, many applications and systems can be enlisted to set up wireless packet networks. Among them are: *NOS, APRS, FlexNet, (X)NET, MSYS, and FBB to name just a few. Work still needs to be done to coordinate the interfacing and interoperability of these communication systems into a cohesive, functioning unit. Maybe you can help to develop a strategy, plan a course of action, and ultimately apply engineering solutions to this pressing challenge...
